browsers
The Browser is software that lets you display documents from computers around the world on the World Wide Web. The browser displays the document as a neat (well, that's usually the intention) web page.
There are quite a number of browsers competing for maximum usage. The two in most common use at the moment are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. The latter is probably becoming the standard browser. It is freely available.
Netscape
The first browser produced by the Netscape company was called Navigator. But then Netscape packaged a suite of programs together and called it Communicator. Many people simply refer to the browsers as Netscape and Explorer
The number after the name of the browser indicates the version number (if it was a book, it would be the edition). It is possible that you use an older version, so what is described here may be a little different to what you use at home, or what you see at the library. However, there are some similarities in the way in which they work and the buttons you press.
The browser is becoming more and more a suite of programs incorporating some or all of these services available on the Internet: the World Wide Web, FTP, News and Mail.
