Be aware that different search engines use slightly different rules to search by.

  1. Suppose you want to search for sites about pet parrots in Australia.
  2. Type in the search words
    parrot australia
    Note: use singular terms and all lowercase
  3. Click the Google Search button and after a few seconds the display changes - the page contains links to all the pages that Google knows about that contain both search words (or keywords) in them.
    The links are listed in order of relevance.
    The page will tell you how many results it found.
    It will display a small number of links at a time.
  4. To go to the site of interest click on the link.
    Use the browser's Back button to return to Google to check out other links.
  5. Sometimes you will want to look up a phrase. To do this use double quotes. For example to check out a person's name or a song title. E.g. "Unchained melody"
  6. To prevent a particular word being used in a search, use a minus. Interested in bears, but not gridiron football?
    A search for bears produces a lot a results.
    A search for bears -chicago leaves out all the football stuff. The minus sign means 'NOT'.
  7. Google has a link to 'Advanced search'. Click on this and see how your search can be limited in lots of ways.
  8. Nearly all search engines have a link to a help page.
