printing
Web pages can be printed - however, because some browsers do not let you 'Print preview', you may not know how many pages will print out. If possible, use the File | Print preview to see how many pages will print. Alternatively, the size of the button on the scroll bar will give you an indication of whether there are a lot of pages, or not very many. The smaller the button, the more pages there are. You may prefer to save the web page for later viewing, rather than printing.
Save the reading till later
You find a page that is chock-a-block full of information and you don't want to spend half an hour reading it now. Save the file. Select File | Save as … You will be prompted about where to save it and what to call it. This file will be saved very quickly because all the material is already in your computer.
If your browser is Netscape, then files (pictures etc.) associated with it will not be saved and will need to be saved separately if you want them.
Explorer will save the associated files in a separate folder, and will adjust things so that the page can be viewed completely, even when not on the Internet.
You view the file later using the browser not a word processor. You open the browser as normal, but do not connect to the Internet. Then use File | Open and browse for the file you want to view. If you find a picture you want to save, right click on it and select Save image as … from the pop-up menu.
You will find it worthwhile having a folder where you can save the files you download.
A trick to get just the text
- Click on Start / Programs / Accessories / Wordpad or any word processor you want to use
- You now have at least two programs running (the browser and Wordpad). You can move from one to the other using their buttons on the taskbar
(Or you can use the ALT+TAB keys on the keyboard - while holding down the ALT key, press TAB as many times as necessary. When on the program you want to use, release the ALT key.) - In the browser highlight the text you want to save by dragging across it with the mouse
- Select Edit | Copy from the menu bar or press CTRL+C
- Switch to Wordpad by clicking its icon on the taskbar (or using ALT+TAB).
- Select Edit | Paste or CTRL+V
- The text is copied into the Wordpad document. Treat it as a normal word processing document - save it, print it etc.
- Return to the browser.
